TBI Model Systems

The Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) Program began in 1987 to improve care and outcomes for individuals with TBI.

Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA is the closest TBI model system in our area. Brochures and fact sheets offer educational information and guidance on TBI diagnosis and treatment best practices.

TBI Case Management

Case management is crucial for empowerment and connection to the community. This organization is a nonprofit created to help close gaps, educate, and raise awareness.

 

Support groups and services are free.

Stroke Comeback Center

The Stroke Comeback Center is a community of survivors of stroke and other brain trauma survivors committed to living successful and productive lives. They offer affordable long-term communication and exercise classes for stroke and brain trauma survivors.

 

They offer a wide variety of classes to meet the individual needs of members, along with social programs and caregiver support.

 

Fees are affordable, and we have a sliding scale based on household income. No one is ever turned away for inability to pay

Virginia State-funded TBI Initiatives

The Virginia Brain Injury Council (VBIC) is a statewide advisory group that advises the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) on services for individuals with brain injuries and their families. It promotes accessible, appropriate services, working closely with DARS and community partners to improve care and support for Virginians with brain injury.

Key Advisory Groups & Organizations

  • Virginia Brain Injury Council (VBIC): Established in 1986, this council is composed of survivors, family members, caregivers, professionals, and state agency representatives
     

  • DARS Brain Injury Services Coordination: DARS oversees a network of local brain injury programs, offering case management, resource coordination, and training to improve services across the Commonwealth.
     

  • Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (CNI) Advisory Board: Administers a trust fund in partnership with DARS, overseeing grants for research and community-based services related to traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.
     

  • Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV): Provides advocacy, education, and support services, working alongside state agencies to assist survivors and families.
